General Adib al-Shishakli as a bearded officer in the first Arab-Israeli War of 1948

Adib al-Shishakli served as a volunteer in the Army of Deliverance, commanded by Fawzi al-Qawiqji, in 1948. He then returned to his duties in the Syrian Army, as an official officer, and helped stage the coup that toppled Shukri al-Quwatli in 1949. He became president of Syria in 1953-1954.
