Faisal entered Damascus on October 3, 1918 declaring it independent from 400 years of Ottoman rule. He established a state from scratch, creating a modern army, currency, government jobs, and was crowned as King of Syria on March 8, 1920. His era was short-lived as he was toppled by the French after the infamous Battle of Maysaloun on July 24, 1920.
