President Amin al-Hafez, who ruled Syria in 1963-1966 and was toppled by a coup d'etat, led by Chief-of-Staff Salah Jadid and Air Force Commander Hafez al-Asad. Amin al-Hafez was arrested, while his two patrons, Michel Aflaq and Salah al-Bitar were banished from Syria. He was released in 1967 and went into exile in Iraq, where he remained until the regime of Saddam Hussein was toppled in 2003.
