President Shukri al-Quwatli giving his first and only televised speech to Syrian TV, from Switzerland, in October 1961
This speech was recorded days after break-up of the United Arab Republic (UAR). When Syrian officers dissolved union, President Quwatli hesitated in supporting them at first, having co-created union with President Gamal Abdul Nasser in 1958. After much delay, he appealed to the people of Syria, supporting the coup while saying: "This is not the union we worked for. We didn't work for a union with 101 spies" (in reference to the police state established by Nasser).
