Dr Nazim al-Qudsi (1900-1998), the new President of Syria. Qudsi had been ambassador and deputy in the 1940s, and prime minister and parliamentary speaker in the 1950s. He was a co-founder of the People's Party of Aleppo. Qudsi was the last civilian leader to rule Syria.
